Little Patches
In a little patch of the universe surrounded by great and majestic planets glistening with bits and pieces of colored moon dust. Lies a teeny-tiny world. This teeny-tiny piece of the vast solar system is called Earth. Earth is a lush and green place, filled with blots and blotches of clear blue oceans, dots and dashes of thick forests and spatters and splashes of high mountains. Dwelling upon this lush green place are many different creatures, some are big and small, others are fat and skinny, some have one head and some have two heads, others have one arm and some have six arms, some have one leg and some have eight legs some.. don’t even have any legs at all. This is a story about a simple little creature who doesn’t have hands not feet nor legs nor even a head. This is a story about a little earthworm named Henry.
Henry was a modest little earthworm who lived on a small patch of earth besides a powerful and wise blue ocean. On sun-shiny days when the wind was calm and the sky was clear, Henry liked to lay out upon the smooth ocean-tumbled rocks. That the wind has sprinkled out on the sun-set pink tinted beach and think. Henry was a great thinker, he thought about the weather and why birds fly south, he thought about star constellations and bee’s wax but mostly Henry thought about Love, Henry was a hopeless romantic whose only wish in life was to Love and be Loved. As much as Henry wanted to love, poor Henry didn’t have anyone. He tried to talk to girls but he was to shy. Girls, he thought wanted someone big and strong, someone who was outgoing and funny… Henry didn’t think he was any of those things, he thought he was to small to be strong and to shy to be funny and to quiet to be outgoing. Henry thought he was plain and ordinary.. too plain and much too ordinary for anyone to love..
One day when the sun was especially hot and the wind exceptionally calm, Henry took a walk, he squirmed ( earthworms have no legs therefore they must squirm ) to the edge of the great blue mass of ocean to see what he could see and to ask the great ocean his questions. For the ocean was wise and knew everything there was to know. He asked the ocean if Love was possible.. if true Love did exist.. if he was ever going to find true love.. if.. so many ifs so many questions Henry had for the Ocean, the Ocean replied with the stark white tips of the rough waves nodding here heads in perfect unison.. they nodded their heads.. up and down and up and down and up and down again as if they were answering Henry with Yes! Yes Henry! Go and Seek romance, but warn you, Love will bring you great pleasures but it will also bring you tragedy.. Henry didn’t listen to the wise and old oceans warning. Henry didn’t care.. he had found an answer to his burning questions.. He was going to Look for Love… to seek its ethereal pleasures.. to dance upon all its glory…
After speaking with the Ocean, Henry searched the sun-set pink tinted beaches everyday for Love.. He looked under cast out sea shells and old bottles containing nothing but lost treasure maps.. Love.. Love.. everyday there was a new search everyday he looked in vain.. every minute he scoured the beach in search of it.
Until one bright sun-shiny day Henry found it He was Looking among some large barnacle encrusted rocks .. when he saw her.. Their eyes met, he saw his future in her eyes, he saw all his hopes and dreams.. Their eyes locked in place, held by cupids unseen arrow.. all was quiet.. Finally Henry broke the silence, he asked her for her name, she quietly almost whispered it.. Emily, Emily she said. Henry had gained a new confidence in himself.. he sat down next to her and begun talking to her.. they talked and they talked.. she listened to him.. and laughed at all his jokes.. they spent the day together swimming in the shallow tide pools that littered the beach after high tide had gone out, they went looking for beach glass, glass that after years of tumbling through the oceans rough water had turned round and smooth. The sun never left them, the sky held onto its light-blue tint, the clouds never came and the wind didn’t howl. It was perfect, perfect for two star-crossed lovers who had just found themselves drenched in Love. As the day ended, dusk hungrily awaiting to turn to night. Emily and Henry realized it was time to go, Henry walked Emily home to her own patch of earth.. lingering on a final kiss before leaving, each making a solemn and good promise to meet each other the next day, not one of them wanting to go, but each of them knowing that hey had to.. until tomorrow, they said.. until tomorrow.. that night Emily and Henry dreamt the same dream.. they dreamed that the days were longer.. that the sun was brighter.. everything was more crystalline and lucid so much clearer, when they were together. They longed to be tangled in a knot of passion, he would do anything for her, she’d be anything he wanted her to be.. they were everything to each other.. they were in Love…
Henry awoke the next morning to a distant sound of screaming, he jumped up and went outside. The screams were coming from Emily’s house.. he twisted and wriggled his way to Emily’s house as fast as he could. He was to late, an enormous legged creature had Emily in his huge outstretched hand he was going to put her in a paper cup.. “ Emily, Emily I’m coming ” Henry yelled.. the enormous two-legged creature begun to walk away, down towards a distant part of the beach.. the creature was walking very fast .. Henry tried and tried but he couldn't catch up.. every time the two legged man creature stopped walking.. Henry hid.. Emily kept screaming.. “ Henry! Henry! Don’t leave me… Please don’t leave me “ Finally the great two legged man beast stopped.. he put the paper cup down.. still with Emily in it and got out a large fishing pole from a pack which he had slung over his back.. Henry not really knowing what to do.. climbed in the paper cup to save Emily.. Just as Henry and Emily were about to climb out onto the beach towards freedom.. the great two legged beast picked up the cup.. Emily and Henry were very frightened.. very scared.. they held onto one another.. they tried to plead and beg with the beast.. the beast ignored there pleas.. the beast stuck his thick reeking fingers into the cup and scooped both Henry and Emily out.. they spilled out onto the two legged creatures hand.. still tangled into one another forming a single mass of flesh.. Emily’s tears had stung Henry’s cheeks.. the tears from Emily only bonded them closer.. they were no longer separate beings.. they had molded to form one single entity.. they were one living breathing mass forged from a single star.. knowing full well that there was nothing to be done to save on another.. they held each other and told each other that their love would carry on even after death.. with that the two legged beast pierced them with a single razor edged fishing hook.. and plunged them deep into a eternal sleep..
The Sun never left them, the Sky held onto its light-blue tint, the Clouds never came and the Wind never howled, it was perfect, perfect for two Star-Crossed Lovers who had just become a Single Star, a Single Constellation who would shine down forever from a little patch in the Universe.
This is a collection of journal entries. A compilation of thoughts that I have written in the margins of books, words scribbled out on the back of paper napkins and sentences taken from the lines of an old notebook. I doubt this will ever be read, But if you happen to stumble across it? Please be careful. Its all I have..
